About Us

Kerry Bate has been practicing occupational therapy with a specialized focus in hand and upper extremity injuries for more than two decades. After graduating with a Master's Degree from New York University in 1997,  she was drawn to Hand Therapy for its critical thinking challenges, and for the opportunity to make a satisfying difference in people's daily lives.  Throughout her career, both in hospitals and in private practice settings, she has worked in close collaboration with doctors and fellow therapists, sharing ideas and knowledge, and ensuring top quality care to her patients every day.

In 2019, Kerry and her family relocated from New York City to the Hampton Roads area, where she is excited to establish new roots in the community!

Peninsula Hand Therapy is a privately owned practice offering patients the caring, individualized, high-quality treatment each of our families expects and deserves. We thank you for putting your trust in us!

Your Treatment

Evaluations

Your first hand therapy appointment will start with a thorough evaluation. Your therapist will ask questions about the history of your symptoms, including any injury or surgery you've had. Strength, range of motion, sensation, and other components of function may be tested. Your therapist will also ask about your self care routines, household activities, occupation, and sports or hobbies, to help establish your needs and determine your therapy goals. Based on all these findings, your therapist will recommend a rehabilitation program that suits your needs. Treatment usually starts the same day, and includes teaching you exercises to do at home.

Treatment Sessions

Communication is important at every hand therapy appointment. Each time you come in, you will talk with your therapist about any changes you have noticed, any new challenges or problems, and any other issues of concern. Treatment each day will vary depending on how you are doing, but will always remain focused on your outcome goals. A variety of treatment modalities may be used, including:

  • Manual Therapy (hands-on techniques performed by the therapist)

  • Therapeutic or Neuro-muscular Exercise (increasing strength or motion, and retraining movement patterns)

  • Therapeutic Activities (practicing functional skills)

  • Physical Agents (eg, hot or cold packs)

  • Electrical Agents (eg, Muscle Stim or Ultrasound)

Splinting

Splinting can be a helpful and often critical component of your hand therapy program. Therapists may apply splints for many reasons, such as:

  • to rest injured tissues and allow healing,

  • to apply a stretch and increase range of motion,

  • to position parts of your hand to help you function better,

  • to restrict motion for reduced stress.

Your therapist will confer with you and your doctor if she thinks you would benefit from either a custom made or commercially available splint.

At Peninsula Hand Therapy, we are pleased to provide custom, same day splinting to patients who are referred by their doctors after an injury or surgery.

Patient Testimonials

"After my pisiform bone removal surgery on my right wrist, I was recommend to Kerry for hand therapy by my surgeon 3 days post op. At my first appointment, she evaluated my hand to make sure the incision looked good. She also explained in detail what techniques and exercises we would do to help relieve the pain and improve motion endurance and strength to my right hand. At every one hour visit, she warmed the muscles up, did ultrasound as needed, massaged the scar and had me do a series of exercises, and always at the end wonderful ice!! She was able to get strength built back in my hand. I have taken what Kerry has taught me to make sure I keep the strength up! I miss my visits with Kerry. She is a good conversationalist, warm, sweet and down- to- earth, You will not be disappointed!!!!"

"I didn't know what to expect from therapy for my wrist injury, and have to admit I was surprised by how helpful it was. Kerry is organized, straightforward, and very effective. I ask a lot of questions, and she patiently answered every one in a way that proved her expertise and gained my trust. She never wasted time, and had a logical process for deciding every exercise she had me do. She was honest about how long it would take for me to get back to playing golf, so my expectations were realistic and I knew my recovery was on track. Making time for hand therapy was definitely worth it, and I'm grateful that my doctor referred me to Kerry Bate's practice. She's the best."

"Kerry was my third occupational therapist, a year into getting diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.  The illness had descended quite fast, medication was not working and therapy was not effective. I had a major problem gripping, lifting my bag, could not lift my arms, could barely write or type a line. I was in constant pain and avoided using my hands with fear of hurting more or dropping stuff. My hand surgeon said “Kerry will help you”.  That was it... I  went to Kerry for years on and off after that introduction, until she unfortunately moved out of New York.  She has patiently worked with me: on my hands, shoulders, and neck, looking for the source of discomfort, trying to keep me mobile, my hands active - always conscious of my pain, always monitoring improvements and setbacks. She constantly liaised with my doctor, and made me numerous splints to stop the progress of my disease. After 4-5 years, I still use the customized casts she has made for my wrists and fingers. Very creative in her exercises, she built on previous work done, taught me what’s important to focus on, when to stop, when to push. Incredibly well educated, patient, knowledgeable and compassionate Kerry is everything you would want your therapist to be. My movement today is for the most part thanks to her, to what she taught me, what she made for me and her kind pressure to never give up and to never push too  hard. I have not been able to replace Kerry, she has saved me from despair."
